The IFP, as the Official Opposition in the KZN Legislature, is concerned that healthcare workers are being targeted by ruthless criminals, after a nurse was killed during a hijacking on Wednesday, 29 November 2023.
According to the KZN Department of Health, the incident took place in Ndwedwe. A male nurse was driving a state vehicle – with five other healthcare workers as passengers. They were on their way to a training session in Durban when their vehicle was attacked by an armed gunman.
Threats, harassment, and the deaths of healthcare workers at community level are extremely worrying. Healthcare workers are servants of the community and play an important role in our society by providing essential medical care.
Now they have become the targets of ruthless, cruel criminals. This further proves that government has failed dismally to eradicate crime. Criminals are running amok in our province; they do as they please. They have shown over and over again that they are not afraid of our country’s laws or of spending time in jail.
Crime has become national sport for many.
Even emergency healthcare workers are not safe. As the IFP, we have been calling for a multi-pronged approach that will involve police, Ward Committees and policing forums, to ensure that emergency service providers are not at risk while performing their duties.
The IFP calls upon the police to work around the clock to apprehend the perpetrators who killed the nurse in Ndwedwe.
